I Can Therapy Centre

A space where everyone is empowered to say, “I can”

Welcome to Our Centre

At the I Can Therapy Centre, we believe that age, ability or health condition should never be a barrier to movement, confidence or connection. That’s why we’ve created a warm, welcoming and encouraging space where your physical, emotional and social wellbeing always come first.

We understand that staying active is about more than exercise. It’s about feeling stronger, moving with greater ease, regaining confidence and reconnecting with your sense of self.

Our community-based centre is open to everyone on a self-referral basis. Whether you’re returning to activity after a break, managing a health condition, preparing for surgery or recovering afterwards, we’ll support you to move more, at your pace and with your goals at heart.

Power-Assisted Exercise

Our unique power-assisted machines gradually guide your body through a natural range of movement, building strength, stamina, flexibility, balance and posture. With a variety of settings and accessories, our team will help tailor each movement to you. We also offer a choice of bikes to boost arm or leg strength and improve aerobic fitness.

Move More Circuit

Our circuit combines nine power-assisted machines with one of three bikes. A typical session takes 45–60 minutes and is all about helping you feel confident, mobile and energised. You’ll always be supported on the circuit by our friendly staff and volunteers, who are there to guide, encourage and cheer you on.

Social Wellbeing

We’re more than just movement – we’re also a community. Our dedicated social space offers the chance to enjoy a cuppa, chat and connect before or after your session. Laughter, conversation and shared experiences are every bit as important to wellbeing as the exercises themselves.

Starting Your Move More Journey

Your journey begins with a Functional Fitness Assessment (FFA) – a simple set of checks measuring strength, balance, flexibility, grip and aerobic capacity. We’ll talk about your goals and what you’d like to achieve, then guide you through a full induction on the circuit, supported by one of our dedicated team.

Progressing Your Journey

Every six months, we’ll invite you to a Refresh Review to see how you’re getting on. Together, we’ll revisit your fitness measures, celebrate your progress and adjust your programme to suit your changing needs.

Therapy Centre - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the I Can Therapy Centre?

      • A welcoming space to improve your health, mobility, and confidence through supported exercise, offering 9 power-assisted exercise machines, 3 seated bikes (including therapy, recumbent, and cross-cycle options), a social seating area with refreshments, and support from in-house trained Move More Coaches.

      What is power-assisted exercise?

      • Power-assisted exercise uses motorised equipment to guide your movement, meaning you are not lifting weights and all movements are supported and controlled, with adjustable speeds (slow, medium, fast) to suit your needs, helping to improve strength, mobility, flexibility, posture, and stamina.

      Is the equipment safe?

      • Yes – the equipment is designed for comfort and support, with seated machines that provide back support, stable and easy-to-use design, and guided, controlled movement, making it suitable for a wide range of abilities.

      Do I need a doctor’s referral?

      • No – this is a self-referral service, and to take part you should be able to stand and support your own weight, transfer between machines safely, and follow simple instructions, and you should seek advice from your GP if you are unsure.

Is this just for older or disabled people?

      • No – everyone is welcome, as the sessions are suitable for all abilities and fitness levels and are ideal if you want to improve strength, mobility, balance, and stamina, move more easily, and build confidence, with exercises always tailored to your individual needs.

      I have a health condition – can I exercise?

      • In most cases, yes – you will be able to confirm that you are happy to start exercising independently or that you have support from your healthcare professional when you complete a Getting Started Questionnaire, and to help us support you safely, please let us know about your condition.

Why should I move more and exercise?

      • Regular movement can help you improve strength and balance, increase mobility and flexibility, boost energy and mood, maintain independence, and support overall health and wellbeing.

      How do I join?

      • To get started, complete a Getting Started Form on our website, providing consent, contact details, health and ability information, mobility information, and a declaration.

What is functional fitness and why is it important?

      • Functional fitness measures how well you perform everyday activities and includes strength, flexibility, balance, aerobic fitness, and skill, helping to track your progress, set personal goals, and ensure your programme is right for you, and it also includes an assessment, goal setting, and a 1-to-1 equipment induction.

Why do I need a 6-month refresh and progress review?

      • The review helps us check for any changes in your health, review your progress and goals, update your exercise programme if needed, complete a one-to-one refresh with a member of the team, and ensure you continue to exercise safely and effectively, and please note that the 6-month refresh and progress review is a compulsory part of your continued use of the I Can Therapy Centre.

What if I use a wheelchair?

      • Wheelchair users are welcome, with a Sara Stedy transfer aid available, provided you are able to stand and support your own weight.

Why might I need to bring someone with me?

      • You will need support if you use a Sara Stedy, cannot transfer independently, or cannot follow simple instructions, and please note that staff cannot provide one-to-one physical support or assist with lifting or transfers.

      How do I pay?

      • We charge a fee to sustain our services as a charity, with payment options including card payment (preferred), pay-as-you-go, or block bookings and vouchers, and people may pay using personal income or savings, benefits such as Personal Independence Payment, Attendance Allowance, or Carer’s Allowance, or gift vouchers from friends or family.

      How much does it cost?

      • We aim to be transparent and affordable, with fees varying depending on session type or package, and as a charity, income from sessions helps sustain our services long-term, so please contact us for current pricing.

Do I need to book in advance?

      • Yes – bookings are available up to 2 weeks in advance, with payment required at the time of booking and card payments only.

      What if I cancel?

      • Please let us know as soon as possible by phone or email; for pay-as-you-go bookings, refunds will be credited to your account, voucher sessions will be returned, and 4-week bookings must be used within the booking period.

What if I am early or late to my session?

      • We will try to accommodate you, with sessions running every 15 minutes and a maximum of 3 people per slot, though you may need to wait or rebook if your preferred time is full.

      What should I wear?

      • Please wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing (no skirts or flared trousers) with supportive footwear such as trainers, and avoid sandals or high heels.

      Are refreshments available?

      • Yes – drinks are available before or after sessions, with a social seating area and a water fountain on site.

Where do I store my belongings?

      • There is a designated coat area and storage available for items such as rollators, walking sticks, and bags, and we ask that you please label your belongings to avoid mix-ups.

      What are your opening times?

      • Opening times vary, so please contact us or check our website for current hours.
