I Can Get Up!

Learn how to feel safer and stronger after a fall.

Falling doesn’t have to mean fear. While falls aren’t an inevitable part of ageing, they do happen – and knowing what to do next can make all the difference.

That’s where “I Can Get Up!” comes in.

This 2-hour, confidence-building workshop offers a supportive and practical approach to understanding falls and learning how to recover safely from one. Created by the experienced team at I Can Move More – and informed by hundreds of conversations with older adults – this session helps you learn what to do if you experience a non-injurious fall.

You’ll explore:

  • Common causes and risk factors for falls
  • Simple ways to reduce your risk
  • An interactive demonstration showing how to safely get up from the floor

We want everyone who attends to leave feeling more in control, more prepared and more confident.

You can attend as an individual or we can deliver the session in-house to your organisation or community group.

If you suspect injury after a fall, always call 999 or seek immediate help.

    Workshop - Frequently Asked Questions

What is an I Can Get Up! information workshop?
I Can Get Up! is a two-hour information workshop covering the ‘F’ words relating to falls, risk factors for falls, ways to prevent falls, a demonstration showing how to get up safely from the floor and planning ahead. A comfort break is provided half-way through each workshop.

How long is an I Can Get Up! information workshop?
2-hours from start to finish with a short comfort break in the middle. We suggest you’ll need 3-hours parking to allow for arrival and departure.

Where do I Can Get Up! information workshops take place?
Currently (March 2026), we deliver workshops within the I Can Therapy Centre in Andover. We publicise these to our customers as an added value service. We are seeking funding to expand our reach from April 2026.

How much does it cost to attend the information workshop?
It’s free of charge to attend at the moment (March 2026) as we offer the session as added value for customers using our I Can Move More services. As the I Can Move More service, including this information workshop, is delivered by a charitable trust (Valley Leisure Ltd, Reg. Charity No. 800760) we ask for a voluntary donation for attending.

Who is an information workshop for?
Anyone who wants to know more about how to help people get up from the floor after a non-injurious fall. You might be at risk of falling yourself, you might have fallen in the past or your friend or relative might be at risk of falling.

Who can attend an information workshop?
Currently (March 2026) our I Can Get Up! information workshops are added value sessions for Valley Leisure customers, those accessing I Can Move More or Riverside Activity Zone services. We are seeking funding to expand our information workshop offer from April 2026 onwards.

    Who delivers the information workshop?
Liz Murray, Head of Active Ageing, delivers the workshop. Liz was inspired to create the workshop after helping someone in an Andover car park get up from the floor after a fall. Never had Liz seen a look of sheer joy and relief on someone’s face at no longer being stuck on the floor after falling. Liz felt that everyone should know how to get up from the floor, and at least how to help someone else get up from the floor after a non-injurious fall.

    What is a non-injurious fall?
A fall which has not resulted in catastrophic injury including unconsciousness, broken bones, severe bleeding or significant bruising and as such, the person who has fallen is conscious, could get up to sitting or standing again, possibly with help. An injurious fall resulting in unconsciousness, broken bones, bleeding or significant and immediate bruising will need checking by a health care professional, it is therefore advised to call 999 or seek an emergency Doctor’s appointment.

What will I achieve by attending an information workshop?
Attendees tell us it’s extremely important for them to know how to get up from the floor after a non-injurious fall. We’ve found that after a 2-hour information session, people’s knowledge increases from not well informed to well informed and confidence in their ability to get up from the floor doubles. Together, improvements in knowledge and confidence improve people’s self-belief in their own capabilities, empowering them to think ‘I Can’!

Why is getting up from the floor after a non-injurious fall so important?
Firstly, because it empowers people to believe in themselves and their own abilities. Secondly, getting up from the floor prevents a ‘long-lie’. A long-lie is a medical concern for anyone who is unintentionally on the floor for longer than one-hour after a fall. Complications including dehydration, hypothermia, pressure injuries, muscle and tissue damage, not to mention toileting, food, drink, medication needs and dignity. For many who have fallen and are not injured, it is the result of a long-lie that may require the person to attend hospital.

Why are we delivering this information workshop?
Falls affect 1 in 3 adults over 65 years of age, rising to 1 in 2 adults over 85 years old yet falls are not an inevitable part of ageing. We’re challenging this narrative through our I Can Move More service, helping people improve their strength and balance to reduce their risk of falling. We’re passionate about preventing falls but we’re realists and know that people can and will have accidents. Educating people about what to do if they have a fall is important to us. We have the knowledge and are passionate about sharing it to help people live their lives with confidence.
