Giving Back, Gaining Strength: A Volunteer’s Story with I Can Move More

Finding strength, connection, and purpose can take many forms, especially when life changes unexpectedly. Chris is a valued volunteer within I Can Move More, beginning his journey by supporting Yoga for Wellbeing sessions. He soon branched out to the I Can Community Club, where he generously helped by making sandwiches for their Christmas party. Over time, his involvement deepened as he became more aware of I Can Move More and also joined the I Can Therapy Centre for his own benefit.

In this case study, Chris shares his personal journey with us – reflecting on how volunteering, community connection, and moving more have played a meaningful role in his wellbeing. His story highlights the impact of I Can, not only as a service but as a supportive community that empowers people to stay active, connected, and positive, whatever their circumstances.

Empowerment
Despite his right leg not working as it should, Chris attends the I Can Therapy Centre once a week, using the sessions to maintain his strength, mobility, and confidence. The tailored support and equipment allow him to exercise safely and at his own pace, helping him stay active despite physical challenges.

Each visit reinforces just how powerful movement can be. Watching others take part in the sessions, Chris is continually inspired by the determination and positivity around him. The Therapy Centre creates an environment where people feel encouraged to move their bodies, often achieving more than they thought possible. For Chris, it is not just about physical exercise – it is about seeing the visible improvements in confidence, independence, and overall wellbeing that these sessions bring, and recognising the life-changing impact they have on people’s quality of life.

Excellence
The team at the Therapy Centre play a key role in making every visit a positive experience. Chris describes them as fantastic, consistently supportive, and encouraging, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy for anyone to feel comfortable and included. Their professionalism, combined with genuine care, ensures that each session is not only effective but also enjoyable.

For Chris, the centre has become much more than a place to exercise. It is a space where new friendships can flourish. Whether attending Therapy Centre sessions, Yoga for Wellbeing classes, or other community activities, he has found that building relationships is one of the most rewarding aspects of participation. He developed a meaningful connection with a fellow participant during the recent Yoga for Wellbeing sessions and looked forward to seeing her again, even though she couldn’t attend the final class. Moments like these highlight just how important the sense of community and shared experience at I Can is – not just for physical wellbeing, but for emotional support and social connection as well.

Community
Since becoming more involved with the I Can Community Club, Chris has met many new people through a variety of sessions, including Kurling, the Town Mills quiz, and the Friday Community Club. Each activity has opened doors to meaningful social connections, helping him feel more engaged and included than ever before.

In the past, Chris often felt lonely and told himself he didn’t need the company of others. His earlier experiences had shaped his perspective, and he rarely sought out social interaction. However, through consistent participation in I Can Move More activities, he has discovered just how valuable connection and community can be. Being part of these groups has not only enriched his social life but also had a positive impact on his overall wellbeing, giving him a renewed sense of purpose and belonging.

For Chris, the difference has been tangible. The friendships he has formed and the shared experiences he enjoys now make him look forward to each session. What began as a way to stay active has evolved into a journey of personal growth, connection, and community – a reminder of how engagement and support can transform lives.

Inspiration
If he had to sum up his experience with I Can Move More in just three words, Chris would choose inspirational, empowering, and community. Having always been active, that drive to keep moving and stay engaged has remained a central part of his life, even when faced with challenges. When a leg injury meant he could no longer take part in charity dog walking – a pastime he had long enjoyed – he didn’t let it stop him. Instead, he sought out activities better suited to his abilities, and I Can Move More became an important part of that new chapter.

For Chris, the importance of community has always been deeply personal. He knows what it’s like to be away from family, especially at Christmas. At 18, he spent Christmas alone in a London barracks. While volunteering at the I Can Community Club social, he spoke with a lady who mentioned she would be spending Christmas alone, and Chris kindly invited her to join him. That simple act of connection and kindness left a lasting impression. Today, Chris sees that same spirit shining throughout I Can Move More – a place where belonging, support, and shared purpose come together, empowering people to move, connect, and thrive.
